Ladies! I know some of you found all my old deviant art sketches so the girls aren’t much of a surprise… but then you haven’t really met them yet :) I’ll admit I was surprised at some of the comments lamenting the fact that there would be female bears added to the cast because really?? You think this thing should stay so overwhelmingly one gendered? I don’t really prefer that, I just had too many characters to play with… and it’s still way too lopsided. I have been watching lots of GOT lately and we all know how that series deals with too many characters… (cue ominous cackling). Anyway, give them a chance. It’s not like they’re going to come in and completely redecorate or something. Change is good! And I have a new colour palette :)
These go live tomorrow on Ript Apparel! (Tuesday the 3rd). And surprisingly the Powerpuff style was kind of a stretch for me. It’s actually a bit outside my comfort zone in how limited it is, and despite my affinity for big eyes, these are goggly and creepy looking and I kept changing them. It was a fun exercise though, I should find the time to try different styles more often… ha! Like I have all the extra time in the world.

I find it amusing that the one labeled “Slutty” is the only one wearing clothing. ;-) Great characters and humor, and wonderful interactions. I’m extremely curious where the author/artist is going to take us next. Awesome work, and thanks for sharing your creativity with the rest of us!

I just wanted to clarify that my offense at the two female bears isn’t necessarily that they’re stereotyped. It is that they are stereotyped in a vacuum of other female characters. I realize we have gay and lech among the boys. But the boys ALSO have death, vanity, nerd, gimp, prozac, and evil- concepts which aren’t exclusively male. But both of the female characters show up, and are ONLY female stereotypes, that’s kind of where I start having a problem. If there had been three or four females, and these two were included, I’d have no issue.
If you want to ignore that argument entirely, how about the fact that they just plain old lack creativity, as others have pointed out?

A comic that is called Bear Nuts, with the head nut named Prozac?
These are not characters of stereotypical “people”, they’re fucking bears! Sensitive PEOPLE need to lighten the hell up or get a clue.
Unless you’re just coming here because you love looking at cartoon bears and don’t care about the story at all, in that case, you should really keep your opinions to yourself. You’re not really experiencing the hard work the artist/storyteller is putting into this site.
(Maybe a late arrival of Zanax should be a strip sometime in the near future?)
There’s a reason why Psychology has rolled up all the mental and physical issues of humans into one word and then let it loose into the public (stereotype A, B, C, etc.)…so those who use the term can be spotted for what they are….ignorant.

They haven’t done anything yet. There has been no action or characterization with which to be stereotypical or uncreative at this time.

Okay seriously people, stop getting your panties in a bunch. Lets look at this logically:
This is a comic making fun of stereotypes. What are the biggest stereotypes usually used against females? PMS and acting like a Slut. We don’t like it, but all we girls know that those are the biggest stereotypes we face.
Now, the story started off as all male, and as is, we have 10 characters on a regular basis. You know how hard it is to write for 10 characters? Yet Alison does it, and quite damn well, and now is bringing in females to the mix because really, after awhile, all male cast and all female cast, there’s just somethings you can’t do with a one-gendered group. 2 females is quite fair a number to the already large cast she’s working with.
I also find it odd that you fuss about the fact of ‘vanity’ being a concept not exclusively male, because while it’s not, it’s often portrayed using a female character, yet Alison chose a male panda.
Now, let’s look at our girls here and the boys in particular to try to understand the number. For one, 10 males to 2 females, clearly not everyone is going to get paired up and ruin the total dynamic with couple-crazy antics. Secondly, while all the males are VERY messed up, it’s quite clear that certain ones will probably not entice or garner the attention of the females. It’s been said that PMS and Prozac will be together, which I’m likely to believe since I’m an absolute werewolf during said time, hence why I call it ‘werewolf’ time. Because of the stereotype of PMS being moody and such, she’ll probably make a good match for him. Slutty on the other hand might be just a free lover and cause massive havoc as she manipulates what males she likes to do as she wants, so may not have a set male at all. And I can tell right now that Tanked, Gay, Vanity, Crack, and Death have no real interest. Tanked is too drunk, Gay is gay, Vanity is clearly too young, Crack will find them unclean, and Death can’t really touch anyone….poor Death. Evil might find interest in Slutty if she is a manipulative person, while Lech…eh, she has boobs, therefore he will jump. Nerd will freak because they’re girls and probably do whatever they say in the whole ‘nice guy’ stereotype. Gimp, I’m not too sure how Gimp will work, he’s all mysterious and all, but he does love some naughtiness, so he could easily sway the girls if they want to be dommies.
I think Alison made a good choice in using the two most common stereotypes girls face, the Bitch or Slut category that guys AND girls put girls through.
And we’re not even sure she’s going to PLAY the stereotypes on their bellies, we have just two smiling females. For all we know it could be Gossip bear and Cotton bear, one is a gossip queen with flapping lips, and the other could be super absorbent (eh, it could happen, you got a Death bear after all.)
So instead of squawking like crazed hens over two characters in a MAKING FUN OF STEREOTYPES COMIC, just sit back and wait and see how the story goes, you might be pleasantly surprised.
And if you don’t like it, then don’t read it, it’s not like this is being forced on you or something.
@Alison, keep up the good work, I don’t care what anyone says, I like it and I can’t wait to see what you do with these girls. Hell, I don’t know, sheesh with all these haters, throw in another girl bear called ‘Sleepy’ and she sleeps alot to escape her depression and pessimism. She can be Death’s cuddles because well, Death is the big sleep right? XD Anyways, do what you want, I like it :D

LOVE the discussion guys! Keep it coming! I totally expected push back about this but it’s extra awesome how people are freaking out and bashing the new characters before they’ve even opened their mouths, because that’s really how we women like to be judged :)
-I do apologize to all the gender pink/purple haters: I get that, but I didn’t have a lot of colours left to use and these stand out. And my son loves pink, so there.
-no need to freak out about love triangles, it’s not really my thing and this is not turning into Twilight any time soon (which may be a bad ref as I have not seen/read those)
-Zee: I don’t really see either stereotype you mention as strong negative depictions of females, it’s all in how it’s portrayed (which hasn’t happened yet!) or in how you personally interpret it. All I can do is write it my way and you can take it or leave it… plus what size shirt are you because A: not in the least and B: not in the sense you seem to be pre-emptively taking.

I don’t really get the backlash these two female characters are getting. They hadn’t spoken yet and already people are getting all in a huffy about it. I just don’t get it. I don’t really see anything offensive about these two new female characters. The marks are just that. Marks. It doesn’t yet reveal what their personalities are going to be like.
Instead of complaining about how the characters look, why not just wait and see how they are? It’s rather silly, immature, and simple minded to start complaining about these two female characters when they had JUST appeared. It’s really unfair to place judgment on these characters when we haven’t even seen what they are like, what their personalities are, what kind of dynamic they’d bring to the comic series. If they had been around for ten issues and you don’t like what they are bringing, then okay. But the first page and already ripping them apart? I consider that shameful.
Anyway I’ve been looking forward to this for years. I was already aware of these characters from Allison’s DA account, so I have something of an idea of what they are like, but times change, so they might be totally different now. It’s going to be interesting to see what these two can bring to the table, and just what kind of mayhem they’ll bring.

Even assuming the accuracy of the deviant art descriptions that just tells us about the characters’ quirks, that one goes into heat and another has mood swings. That still tells us nothing of their actual personalities.

Okay, yes the fact that it is offensive that the girls encompass the two biggest and gender biased stereotypes is a fair point. But these girls haven’t done anything yet to show that they’re flat characters and Allison has shown that she can take flat offensive stereotypes and give them some depth to make them interesting.

What I REALLY want to know, for some reason, is if the two female bears already know/knew each other? I would think, being penned together suddenly in new surroundings, they’d first want to get to know each other since each other is the first living thing they see after getting dumped in the zoo. But I figure they must have already met, probably on the truck ride there.
And I have zero problem with the name/picture/color choices~ I’ve been waiting far too long for their debut, and I actually really love that they are pink/purple. Though, I was hoping a leeeetle bit that one of them would be sterotypically sweet, innocent, and girly and froo-froo-happy. But I guess that would mean she would be taken advantage of pretty easily.
But hey, I guess Vanity’s idea is down the drain! And unless Lust bear’s into cosplay, Nerd’s outta luck too. Lech might actually score. Hell, PMS might even LIKE Gay, but I can totally see Lust bear picking on him mercilessly, or pretending to run and hide behind Gay after she’s led one of the other boys on, JUST to see them beat on poor Gay.

Wow, people. The next arc, or rather ‘female’ story line has barely begun and ya’ll already are complain! Just take the comic for what it is, cheap, or rather FREE entertainment. I just hope the next page doesn’t go to ruin like the Nikki Sprite did. One person complained about the story and the author was forced to change it; ruining any upcoming suspense. While we’re on the topic of “offensiveness” let’s look at the guys. They’re all stereotyped for example, Gay is as gay as they come. He is your stereotypical homo, he likes to bake and likes lady clothes. Lech is what you’d call your typical jock, only having a strong interest in porn, booze and sports. But I guess since they’re male, no one bats an eye. Now you see PMS bear and Slutty bear and people are going crazy.
It’s like this, I AM a girl who enjoys Bear Nuts am I offended by these stereotypical female bears? No. Because all I see this series as, is what it is. Entertainment. If you don’t like it you can read something else otherwise just enjoy it.

In all seriousness, I love this page. Lips’s furry ears are adorable, and Tampon is just too cute for words. And those smug, self-assured expressions…these two are going to be trouble. I can’t wait. Also, it was nice of Gay to throw on a vest for the occasion despite his misgivings about the whole thing.

ok. this ticks me off…not the comic (fantastic. love the everything!) but the comment….JEEBUS they havnt even DONE anything and ya’ll are firing up the torches and pitchforks. you all grown ass people stop throwing ya toddler temper tantrums over webcomics you get to read for free. How is it that so many people are all butthurt over the gender stereotype belly marks? Managed to look past the current bears stereotypes just fine- havnt seen anyone complaining about gay’s pink hippo or nerd’s hotdog, but omg heads are gonna roll because females? seriously… the girls have been planned for a long time and i eagerly await what new dynamics they’ll bring to the table. I HOPE they put all you nay-sayers to shame ….such massive MASSIVE shame that it will cause ya’ll to collectively burst into screaming fireballs as ya shrink away from the sick burns these bears be throwing. I for one like our first look at the girls. They look like they are going to be no pushovers. I don’t mind the colour choices, either. Pink and purple are perfectly decent colours. I wear them often. RECLAIM THE PINK, YO.

@Yu Hou: …No, do not reclaim the pink. Not all females like pink (and shouldn’t have to either). Personally, I think people should be allowed to have any color preference they want, not just on the basis of gender (girl who has always been into blue, even at a young age), but if you like pink, that”s fine. Not trying to be a butt though, so please don’t take this a malicious or whatever.
Man, all this talk about the girls’ coloration makes me wanna do a small mockup of ’em in different colors now… :/

jeez the girls just have 2 panels (well a panel and have half if anything since u just see the pink bear’s silhouette) and already ppl r shooting them down. for all those complaining about the female stereotypes: the whole point of Bear Nuts is to poke fun at these stereotypes.
we have:
– 2 “druggies”=i say two bec our Prozac and Crack r essentially 2 different paths a druggie can go down: a) be an overall happy person and such, but have crazy mood swings if they run out of their stuff and could possibly snap at any time when stressed, or b) become absolutely paranoid and crazy due to either a side effect of their drug of choice or withdrawal from being off their drug of choice. yes Crack doesnt take anything, as far as we’re concerned, but his symbol-a needle-suggests a drug addict
– a nerd/geek
– a horny douchebag
– an alcoholic
– a crazed pyro=our lovable pychopath Evil is essentially meant to represent the troublemakers, daredevils and/or adrenaline junkies
– a “fruit”
– a narcissist
– a submissive
– death=everyone fears this “stereotype” bec, well, i suppose it’s only natural to fear it bec ppl have grown attached to living and dont want to die bec they believe it’s their “the end” to their story (now i wont go into the whole reincarnation discussion bec there r a couple religions that believe it but there r some who dont and that’s perfectly fine…believe what u want)
and now we have, what seems to be:

so, seriously, if the females r bothering u that bad…u dont understand the whole point of Bear Nuts at all. it’s just a little project to poke fun at stereotypes for everyone’s entertainment

I don’t understand how some people are offended by ‘stereotypical’ girls. Urm, hello? The boys are kinda stereotypical too. The comic isn’t about some HIGH MORAL IDEAS. It is made for laughter.
I personally awaited for girls for too long. I knew how they were going to look. I think I know what will be their names. And I can’t wait to see them in action. I love the designs. And I find their pics in tummies reflecting theit personalities absolutely hilarious. Especially the PMS ;)
So, people who are offended should quietly quit, and not making a fuss because of their mental/psychological/social problems!

@NAZF: What makes you think I’m a girl? Reclaim the pink is for everyone! It’s cool if you don’t happen to like it, but it’s a bit unfair to hate on a colour just because it has negative gender stereotyping associations. Guy I know turned up to a wedding in a pink cravat. He looked AWESOME. Pink for all (who like pink)!

If you think the GoT series has too many characters, try reading the books… I’m a bit behind on the show myself, just saw episode 7 last week, which was a nice cliffhanger…
Also nice to see the Dutch invasion continue.
As for bearnuts. No problems with female characters here. The thing is, single males tend to start acting very different with female around, so I do expect some changes…
