I drew a nice polar bear for a ShirtWoot derby on the arctic. It was kind of a PSA type theme sponsored by a conservation group so I went kind of sad in my entry and it didn’t end up placing too high but he’s a cute polar all the same… or maybe I’ll just call it a girl bear to help even things out a bit… I gotta come up with a bunch of random female side characters and better represent my gender… what are the most feminine zoo animals anyway?

Nerds Bear Nuts aren’t safe even from paint, poor fella. At least it’s non-toxic, otherwise things could have gotten bad.
Hey, the baby elephant grew up a little. Her huge eyes may be gone, but she’s still so darn cute. Almost makes me want a pacaderm in my house XD.

female animal potentials…
the ostrich (think fantasia ballet scene..which would also make hippos a shoe-in)
giraffe, chameleon (dont ask why…) or any lizard really, lioness, some sort of exotic primate perhaps?
could also use a strange bird, like an ibis (i met a really friendly lady one once..she groomed my dates shoes with her beak..i think she liked him)

Lets see; Evil has voodoos of the polars, Prozac, Gay (didn’t he learn from last time), Lech, Tanked, Madge, Vanity, the Crocs, Sloth (just in case he returns), and Death (don’t even want to cross that line). Surprisingly, the girraffes, Crack, nor Nerd are there. Guess they are deeper in the Demonic Chest of Doom.

lol evil has voodoos of everyone, even an elephant and I think even a crocodile… even poor tanked is there (in case evil gets tired of taping his head to the floor I guess…) but whats the light brown doll in the top left corner?

The most feminine creatures at the zoo? Birds(lord knows they talk and socialize enough) Red Pandas (Seriously, those things are so freakin’ adorable.) Cats and hm….Octopi? well they’re awesome mom’s if nothing else.

I’ve read your comic for a while, and this is a perfect example of the facial expressions I adore. So, so well done and amusing, epecially poor Nerd’s spray paint flashback.

Please, would you fix the glaring error, there is no “should of,” that should be “should have.” I understand making typos, but this is on the level of basic literacy.

female zoo characters? zebras. most equine’s, aside from the wild asses, because long ears translate to male somehow. wild dogs, particularly jackals, due to their slender build. antelopes of varying types, so long as horns are absent. kudu and nyala would visually be great.

Feminine zoo animals?: hummingbirds, lioness, horses (i.e. zebras?), those safari deer things.. i forget what they are called. i dunno! all animals can be male or female so its kinda silly thing to try to pick out which are more “feminine” :P

@Rasselas: She’s writing dialogue. People do not speak properly at all times, even when it comes to “basic literacy”. Perhaps you should consider this, as well as the effort that goes in to making dialogue seem realistic, before you go around “correcting” people’s grammar.

I looked up the word tarty and I was like, wow; Gay is dressed as a prostitute 0.0! Did someone find out he was using credit card fraud and this was the only way he could think of to pay off the money he stole. Probably gives the special with the Gucci Deluxe for $70. I find it kind of ironic that a web made to stop human trafficking has a pic with Gay looking like a prostitute. I guess bear trafficking dosen’t count.
Bear Nuts! It’s only PG because all it has is a drunkard, a satanist, gay jokes, referring Animal Planet programs as porn, a S&M participant, language, destruction of reproductive organs, pill poppers, a crackhead, blood, violence, softcore sex scene (first page), a perverted jock, voodoo, vomit, trip out moments (muffin arc), and douchbag characters. How on earth would anyone think this is PG-13 material? XD (sarcastic tone)

@KimmQuinn: If you pronounce it that way, it’s not such an error, because it sounds similar. It is an error if you write it down that way. The error itself is the result of people writing it down how they *thought* they heard it. If you think it’s okay to be illiterate, be my guest. I’ve had enough of lowering my standards, and I don’t care how butthurt you are.

Feminine zoo animals— a lioness for sure! They do all the hunting and the work while the lazy male lion sits at home grooming his mane. I’ve always thought gazelles very graceful and feminine looking, as well as giraffes (perhaps the super model of the animal kingdom?) and cheetahs.

@ Rasselas: You are absolutely correct – “should of” is grammatically incorrect, and no verbal accent I can think of would justify using it in dialogue. However, you should (in my opinion, at least, and probably KimmQuinn’s as well) tread lightly when you’re treading upon the feelings of the artist. Regardless of what donations you may have made, or merchandise you have purchased, the privilege of visiting this website and viewing the Bear Nuts comic when it is released is not one for which you pay.
Most webcomic artists welcome constructive criticism. Constructive criticism does not include implying a failure of “basic literacy” – that’s insulting. But even without that, if your “constructive criticism” is just harping on an issue that several (two, in this case) people have already mentioned, then it ceases to be constructive and devolves into “annoying.”
Just my $0.02 worth, but you’re getting it as free advice, so it’s a bargain, right?

Actually what Evil is saying is “should’ve,” the contraction of “should have.” Personally, I read right over it. I like how it looks coming out of Evil’s mouth.

Oh! Forgot to mention, yes. Big cats of any kind (panthers come to mind) would make great female characters. Also elk, deer, bighorn sheep. Hmmm…what else? Raccoons might be fun. Or otters! Or cobras.

Ahhhh damn. You know what it is? This comic is otherwise perfect. Seriously. Spotless. The art, the dialogue, the humor, the characters. And then I come here and see such a glaring, horrific mistake, and it reminds me of how little regard people have for.. well, basic stuff like that. I’m an ESL speaker, and even I know better than that. It just reminds me of the general tendency of the world around me to slide into ever increasing stupidity. And I get horrified and angry. The freakiest thing was, just today, TWO of my favorite comics made the same mistake. I’m honestly not a stickler for typos, nor a Grammar Nazi, not from some position of high-and-mighty who knows better.
I’d just.. prefer if the author fixed the mistake, so I could go on loving this comic to bits, without being reminded of the ugly reality around me. I won’t somehow magically stop loving it because of one little error, but I have baggage, you gotta understand, okay? Also I will sheepishly admit that in my anger, even though I skimmed through the posts, I hadn’t noticed that the issue was already mentioned. I’m sorry, and I apologize for being rude.

@Rasselas: Seriously now… I do like to consider myself capable of basic literacy and considering I do this myself and I don’t have an editor I’m quite happy that there’s been very few errors make it up in almost 250 pages. When it was pointed out by a couple of others I changed the print files and was thinking about changing the web one but honestly your tone of voice irked me so much I’m likely just going to leave it. I am always amazed when people take the time to passionately crit free entertainment like webcomics, justified or not. I’m thankful when people notice my typos but I don’t appreciate when they denigrate other commenters and I think you came off very rude to KimmQuinn. Plus my mother is a teacher and I get a snippy email whenever I mess up so believe me, it’s not a case of me having “little regard” for grammar…I should probably just get her to edit my scripts… Anyway, I do appreciate your apology so no harm done.

Hey, if you are ever inspired…I would love to see a Tron version of Death. :) Maybe for a vote incentive? I’m a huge fan (saw it 12 times in the theatre when I was 14 back in 1982–yes, I’m a geek). I’ve also enjoyed the new flick and I suddenly just thought how cool it would be to see a Tronized version of one of the bears. Death being my fave, of course I picked him.
Anyway…just a thought if you’re looking for vote incentive fodder. Thanks for ALL you do. Bear Nuts is literally my favorite web comic.

I completly forgot to type this earlier, but….. Female Foxes. It’s classic, yes, but they are, more often then not, more devious than Evil is.
@ Rasselas And, typing of Evil, That typo really isn’t a typo. When on athur is writing a character’s dialogue, they usually write it as that character would most likely say the words. You wouldn’t expect to hear Oxford-style senences from a biker, so why expect a character that is known to be EVIL to have perfect grammar.
It’s little intentional mis-spellings like that that sells a charater to the reader.
….and… I am sorry if I sounded like a jerk for correcting you when others have already….

Well, this whole typo debate is too bad. Just because comics have relatively little lettering per page, does not mean mistakes are easier to catch. Alison does an extremely awesome job all around, and I don’t see how anyone could read through 242 pages and think she isn’t capable.

Hello Ms Acton & fellow readers. Long time follower of BN and very first time replying. Let me just say that I hope you and little Sam are doing well and wish the best of luck in juggling him and this into your day life, I also hope BN lasts for a good long while. Now there’s a thought that’s been swimming around my skull for a good while and I’d like for my fellow readers and yourself (if possible) to provide feedback. The idea is this: a radioplay of BN run by the fans, for the fans. I’m pretty sure we’ve all wondered what each bear sounds like and I’m also quite sure we’ve each thought of a way said bears would speak. Comments,criticism, concerns etc. are welcome. Heyo, looking forward to how this pans out. Evil and nerd should’ve teamed up a long time ago. Not quite brains and brawns, more like brains and… balls. Evils not afraid to get his hands dirty at least. Also, after watching firefly season 1 -final season :( – I’m glad that the polls let me vote again, star wars has NOTHING on firefly.

I suppose female bears are inevitable but I wonder what effect they’re going to have on the dynamic of what’s effectively a big frat house or “The Odd Couple” writ large… very large. The faint desperation of a bunch of bachelors having to channel their, um, creative urges into other pursuits (Lech notwithstanding, apparently) might be part of what gives the strip its vitality. But times change and things have to move on… in Alison we trust. ;)

Like some said, Flamingos are feminies. Ostriches are feminine. Macaws are feminine.
Also Gazelles are extremelly feminine. You can even name one “bundchen”. Gazelle Bundchen, got it? Got it?
Zebras and Okapis.
And Fennecs. And cheetahs
Turtles are old ladies, toucans are teenage girls with nothing on their head.

Would you consider making a tutorial on how to draw the bear for others to make their fan characters? I’ve spread this comic like a virus and people are loving it. Heck, some people have bits of the comic as their avatar.
I also request if I can have a link to your comic when I am done with the site I am making. It will have its own special page with the latest page on the front. This comic is unbelievably amazing and very humorous and I want as many people reading this comic.
